Starnberger See: a lake in Five Lakes Region at 584 m, covering 56.36 km² and up to 127.8 m deep. Starnberger See starts almost at Munich’s city limits: 56 km² of water, an S-Bahn to the shore and Rose Island, where Ludwig II met Empress Sisi.

About Starnberger See

By volume it is Bavaria’s largest lake, up to 127.8 m deep, and it rarely freezes. King Ludwig II died on the east shore in 1886 under unexplained circumstances; a cross in the water at Berg marks the spot. Bernried Park and the Buchheim Museum lie on the west shore.

Can you swim here?

Lidos and free meadows are at Starnberg, Possenhofen, Tutzing, Seeshaupt and Ambach. The depth keeps the water fresher than at Wörthsee.

Which walks are there?

The King Ludwig Way runs along the east shore. Ilkahöhe near Tutzing has a beer garden with a view over the lake to the Alps. A full loop is about 50 km, which most people do by bike.

How do you get there?

The S6 runs from Munich to Starnberg in about 30 minutes, and the station is right on the lake. Boats of the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt connect the lakeside towns.

Our tipA small ferry from Feldafing goes to Rose Island with its casino and rose garden, a quiet detour many day visitors miss.

Towns on the shore: Starnberg, Tutzing, Feldafing, Berg, Seeshaupt. Travel time from Munich is a rough estimate by car or train. Area, depth and altitude from Wikipedia and Wikidata.
