Eibsee: a lake in Zugspitze Region and Karwendel at 973 m, covering 1.77 km² and up to 36 m deep. Eibsee lies directly below the Zugspitze and shimmers green to turquoise depending on the light. It is the region’s most photographed mountain lake and an easy walk.

About Eibsee

The lake formed about 3,700 years ago through a huge rockslide off the Zugspitze. It sits at 973 m, reaches 36 m and has several small islands. Underwater boulders are clearly visible from boats.

Can you swim here?

Swimming is allowed and even pleasant on hot days. Many visitors hire rowing or pedal boats at the Eibsee Hotel to reach the bays.

Which walks are there?

The loop is about 7 km, roughly two hours, well signposted and partly on wooden walkways. From here climbers head for the Wiener-Neustädter Hut, or you take the cable car straight to the Zugspitze.

How do you get there?

The Bavarian Zugspitze Railway runs from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Eibsee, plus a bus in summer. The car park is large but fills early on fine days.

Our tipWalk anticlockwise and reach the north side early in the morning, when light falls on the Zugspitze massif.

Towns on the shore: Grainau. Travel time from Munich is a rough estimate by car or train. Area, depth and altitude from Wikipedia and Wikidata.
