Best Time to Visit Bavaria’s Lakes

Water temperature, crowds and boat services change most through the year.
Spring
In May the meadows bloom, the mountains still carry snow and the lakes are empty.
Summer
July and August are swimming time. Shallow lakes like Waginger See pass 20 °C, while deep mountain lakes stay much cooler. Weekends get busy, so start early.
Autumn
September and October are considered the finest hiking time: clear views, fewer visitors and golden larches. Many boats run until mid-October.
Winter
Lakes are still and quiet in winter. Boat services are reduced, and a few lakes such as Spitzingsee or Tegernsee have winter sports nearby.
