Hiking in the Bavarian Alps: Tips for Beginners

To start, you need an easy route, sturdy shoes and a look at the forecast.
Start small
An easy loop such as the Eibsee walk or Schliersee walk shows how your shoes feel. After that, try a first summit such as the Neureuth.
Reading trail markings
Bavarian mountain paths are graded: blue means easy, red intermediate and black difficult. Black often means exposed sections that demand sure feet.
What to pack
Sturdy shoes with good grip, a rain jacket, a spare shirt, enough water, sun protection and a small first-aid kit. Our packing list helps.
Safety
Start early, check the weather the day before and turn back in time. Summer thunderstorms often build by early afternoon. The emergency number is 112.
