The most striking mountain lakes

On Königssee electric boats pass between rock walls, and the boatman plays a trumpet at the Echo Wall. Eibsee offers the best view of the Zugspitze with an easy loop for all ages. For colour, head to Walchensee, which glows like the Caribbean on sunny days.

The best lakes by train

Tegernsee, Schliersee, Starnberger See and Ammersee are all reachable without a car. Trains stop minutes from the shore, often faster than the traffic.

The warmest swimming lakes

Waginger See, Wörthsee and Staffelsee warm up far faster than the deep Alpine lakes, which makes them ideal for a relaxed day with children.

Chiemsee has Ludwig II’s palace, Alpsee looks up to Neuschwanstein, and at Lake Constance a lion guards Lindau harbour.
