Reaching Bavaria’s Lakes Without a Car

By Christian Gebhardt, Updated:

Roads to the lakes often stand still on summer weekends, but many lakes lie right on a railway line.

By S-Bahn

The S6 runs from Munich to Starnberger See, and the S8 to Wörthsee, Pilsensee and Ammersee.

By regional train

The Bayerische Regiobahn links Munich with Tegernsee and Schliersee. Trains also stop at Kochelsee, Staffelsee and Prien on Chiemsee.

Tickets

The Deutschlandticket is valid on S-Bahns, regional trains and most buses. Groups can look at the Bayern-Ticket. Check current conditions with the railway.

From the station

Many stations are a few minutes’ walk from the shore. For the rest, use buses or bikes, which you can usually take on regional trains.
